Can anyone be a witness to my signature?
No. They must not be a beneficiary in your Will, nor married to a beneficiary.
They must be over 18 years of age, of sound mind and not blind. You will need two witnesses who must both be present when you sign and date your Will. They don’t need to see the contents of your Will, only you signing it.
COVID-19 & Witnessing
Witnessing should be done with safety in mind, keep 2 meter distances, don’t share pens and once the documents are complete and have been put away wash your hands. It is unclear how long the virus lasts on different surfaces but it is suggested that it will survive 24 hours on cardboard.
What should I do with my Will after I have signed it?
You should leave it in a safe place and ensure your executors and/or family know where it is being kept. Your Executors will need the original Will, not a copy. We supply a very inexpensive legal storage service providing storage certificates for the testators and executors so all who need to know where it is actually know. One phone call is all that is required to retrieve the will and ID and copy of the death certificate which can both be sent by email or text. While the documents are in storage amendments are free of charge, there are a host of other benefits but this is not the place to detail. If you have an interest in the service call or email and you’ll be directed to the
appropriate website.
